Digital MakerSpace Lab

ISTE Standards:

1c.  Leverage CT and CS experts, resources, and professional learning networks to continuously improve practice integrating CT across content areas.

5.3b Apply effective teaching strategies to support student collaboration around computing, including pair programming, working in varying team roles, equitable workload distribution and project management.

5.4cGuide students on the importance of diverse perspectives and human-centered design in developing computational artifacts with broad accessibility and usability.

My Experience:

While I was exploring which of the resources to use when looking at Maker Ed under the "open source software" tab, I ran across a website Scratch. This website had all sorts of games that you can play and explore. While I was on the website, I was able to play a variety of different games such as the Escape Room, Design Your Own Treehouse, and Space Shooter 2.0.  Overall, I really enjoyed all of these games as they touched on many different things when playing them.

Lesson For Students:

When having the students work inside this website, I would probably let them explore a little bit before I gave them a specific one to work with. The one that I am choosing is the Escape Room because of the problem-solving and teamwork that come with it. This game was rather hard whenever I was playing it, but if you allow your students to play this game as a class, then they are able to work against each other and also work with each other.

The whole game is pretty much a really complicated and large puzzle. This allows the students to work on their problem-solving skills when they are playing the game.  You could have students work in different groups to compete against other groups to see who can get out of the room first. You could also have the students try and come up with their own escape rooms as well.

  1. Amazing job! Thank you for sharing your lesson with students. I felt it was so insightful to see how you would allow them to explore this makerspace. Great job!

  2. Make sure you add your ISTE standards to the page! I like that you added a picture so we could see a visual. Also adjust your font so it is all black!

  3. Hi Sydney, I think these standards would fit into your activity!
5.3b Apply effective teaching strategies to support student collaboration around computing, including pair programming, working in varying team roles, equitable workload distribution and project management.
** With this standard, you can incorporate pairs or working together in a small group to solve the problem or in the game you described working together to come up with their own escape room.
5.4cGuide students on the importance of diverse perspectives and human-centered design in developing computational artifacts with broad accessibility and usability.
**This standard can be implemented by demonstrating what the students will be doing or maybe doing one challenge together then allowing students to design and think of a creative approach themselves to accomplish the goal.
