Procedure

  1. Anticipatory Set

A Brilliant Tutorial for Kids to Understand Tessellations” CraftCue

      

  1. Guided Practice- Teamwork

    1. Students will team with one another to complete a puzzle using pieces created from the I-Create lab laser engraver.  

  2. Independent Practice

    1. Students will be provided differentiated worksheets with unique nature based patterns to identify and color. 

  3. Check for Understanding

    1. After splitting into teams, students will work together to distinguish patterns by their shapes and color. The team with the most correct matches is the winner!

  1. Closing

    1. Students will be able to take a piece of their turtle puzzle pieces (with an attached key ring) created from the laser engraver as a take-home token.

Materials & Resources

  1. Instructional Materials:

    1. Puzzle Pieces 

      1. Used the laser cutter to cut acrylic to create turtle puzzles.  

    2. Cards with pictures of different patterns found in real life.

      1. They will be matching them to an actual plant/ animal found in the wild.

    3. Coloring Pages

      1. They will be coloring different patterns. 

T Assessment

Students will be assessed on their understanding of patterns informally and formally throughout this lesson. Informal assessment is embedded into allowing students to problem solve puzzles and color patterns on their own. Students will be formally assessed on their understanding with the matching game of patterns to their object.

    **This standard is one I would incorporate because this lesson is fun, engaging and allows your student to explore their puzzle creations they have created.
    5.3aModel and learn with students how to formulate computational solutions to problems and how to give and receive actionable feedback.
    **This standard would be a good fit for your activity because it allows you to model, explore and learn with your student while problem solving.
